My name is Sydney and I’m a 4 year old spayed female full-blooded Australian Shepherd. My family was heartbroken to have to give me up but with a pending divorce, they realized that a new home was in my best interest.  I am a very sweet girl who loves to cuddle and adores belly rubs.  I know a few commands like sit, stay, come and down.  Unlike some other Aussies, I don’t jump on the counter and I’ll only get on the couch or bed if you allow me.  I get along with other dogs (as long as they get along with me!) and I love kids.  I grew up with a little boy in my house and I used to sleep in his room every night.  I played with the neighborhood kids, too.  I don’t have much experience with cats and have only seen one once.  I am an Aussie, however, and I have some herding instincts that need some work.  I like to chase cars and bicycles and I get very excited when I see other people and dogs on neighborhood walks.  I sound very scary when I bark but like a typical Aussie, I greet people with the proper amount of skepticism until I feel comfortable – then I’m all wiggles and kisses. I can also be a bit protective of my family but I’m an Aussie – that’s my job, right?  Because of this, I will only go to a home that has a fenced-in yard (privacy fence preferred).

My current foster in Raleigh, NC is a dog trainer and she’s working with me on my herding issues and manners.  She would like for me to go live with someone who has prior experience with Aussies and is willing to put in the time and energy necessary continue my training.  My foster thinks I would be really good at agility or other dogs sport – maybe herding is in my future?  I love tennis balls and Frisbees and I’m very food motivated.   I’m fully vetted, up to date on heartworm and flea medicine and microchipped.

Vet references, an interview and a home visit will be required prior to placement.  A two-week in-home trial will be allowed.    ONLY a home with prior Aussie experience (or similar herding breeds) will be considered.  Sydney will not be adopted out to homes with kids under 7 years old.
